Physics Roles in Golf - 634 Words
Physics is in everything around us. It is in us driving a car, walking down the street, and pushing a child on a swing. Physics is also in every sport you have ever played, or watched someone play. It is involved in a baseball player swinging his bat, or a swimmer cutting through the water. It is also in golf. In this paper I will discuss three different ways that physics plays a role in the game of golf. The first is the motion of hitting the ball, or the swing, the second is the spin of the ball, and the third is the loft of the driver. Let us start with the basic motion of golf, which is swinging the club and hitting the ball. The golf swing is an example of angular motion. The twist that golfers have in their swing produces torque on the club, which changes the angular velocity of the club. The key to getting the ball to travel such long distances lies in the club head velocity. The faster the club head is going at the bottom of the swing, the further the ball will travel. This i s due to a greater amount of kinetic energy being transferred from the club head to the ball. In other words, if a golfer can get the right twist down at the right time, the club will be sped up when it connects with the ball. Most professional golfers can achieve speeds of around 100 MPH at the bottom of their swing. Who would have thought that there would be so much science behind what seems to be a simple golf swing? (The Physics of Golf) Moving on to the second way that physics plays a roleShow MoreRelatedThe Physics of a Golf Ball Essay1277 Words à |à 6 PagesThe Physics of a Golf Ball The first written reference of golf was in 1457. Golf balls have had extraordinary changes since that time; theyve gone from leather pouches to dried gum to todays dimpled balls. These dimples help decrease the drag and increase the lift. Different forces are applied to the golf ball when struck by the club. Golf clubs have grooves to create backspin. And then there are different variables that affect how a golf ball will travel, these include: lie angle andRead MoreA Brief Biography of Luis Walter Alvarez691 Words à |à 3 Pagesnot the end of his scientific interest. Luis Walter Alvarez continued to study science and physics. He was credited with many necessary discoveries about subatomic particles for which he earned the Nobel Prize in physics. His work did not stop there. He was a co-developer in the creation of the ââ¬Å"ground-control approach systemâ⬠for aircraft during the 1940ââ¬â¢s. Luis Walter Alverez had a very significant role in the development Manhattan Project, in which he suggested the technique used for the detonationRead More Physics of Golf Essay3710 Words à |à 15 PagesMany golf equipment companies are constantly trying to improve the different ââ¬Å"toolsâ⬠used during the game. And with the incredible rate of technology, golf equipment is constantly being taken to higher and higher levels. In fact, technology now allows golf equipment so precise and accurate, that many people believe it requires less skill to be a really exceptional golfer. As technology and the study of physics progresses, only newer and better equipment will be produced. This is why a lineRead MoreEffect of Spin on the Trajectory of a Kicked Soccer Ball Essay1094 Words à |à 5 Pagesabout 30 meters from the net and a tiny bit to the right. He hit the ball so hard that it cleared the wall by a meter. It then suddenly curved to the left and went into the right upper 90. When watching soccer most people dont think about the physics behind the flight of a struck soccer ball. That is why I am doing this project to see if the different ways the ball spins effects the trajectory of the ball. I will be focusing on three different spins of the ball using my dominant foot for allRead MoreReasons For Getting A Soundproof Door Installed Essay2207 Words à |à 9 Pagessize of the doors that need to be sound-proofed. Minimum cost incurred in sound proofing small and average sized doors is approximately $400 per door. Larger doors need around $900 for sound proofing. The material of the door also plays an important role in coming up with the costs of the sound proofing procedure. Price of Installation Procedure Used Different sound proofing experts make use of different sound proofing methods and this greatly influences the total cost of sound proofing a door. Even though most men have full respect for women, there is still a lot of conflict in the male perception of the real role a woman plays in the day to day lifestyle and if indeed they are equal. Each generation has its minority that is vocally fighting for change. For example, today it seems that everywhere you turn there is another news story about the struggle for gayRead More Physics of Swimming Essay1870 Words à |à 8 Pages The study of physics and fluid dynamics in swimming has been a field of increasing interest for study in the past few decades among swimming coaches and enthusiasts. Despite the long history of research, the understanding of how to move the human body effectively through the water is still in its infancy. Competitive swimmers and their coaches of all levels are constantly striving for ways to improve their stroke technique and overall performance. The research and performances of todaysRead MoreThe Great Depression Of The 1920 S1706 Words à |à 7 Pageswomen in the workforce increased (sparknotes.com, 2016). The women under this category are the ones who have embraced the new fashion styles, personal freedom, and new ideas that women have struggled with before due to the idea of traditional roles of women. The traditionalists were worried that the ââ¬ËNewRead MoreA Study On My Favourite Maths Extension 2 And Chemistry1705 Words à |à 7 Pagesrecent university studies? [50/50 words] My favourite are Maths Extension 2 and Chemistry as I appreciate the challenging concepts requiring problem solving and the integration of theoretical concepts. My least favoured are Maths Extension 1 and Physics as, although I enjoy the subject, there is a major focus on formulae application with less understanding required. But what cannot be doubted are the objects nearby, such as the keypad Iââ¬â¢m typing on and that Iââ¬â¢m sitting on a chair. So Descartes went to the next argument, the Dream Hypothesis, which claims that our senses are dubitable because when we dream, we are convinced that we are having real life experiences as a wizard or driving to the shops, not asleep in bed. However, with that hypothesis we cannot doubt the laws of physics and mathematics
